ROCKFORD – A very specialized Rockford hospital unit celebrates one year in the Stateline.
Mercyhealth’s Small Baby Unit cares for the area’s smallest newborns, either those born less than 27 weeks or weighing less than 2.2 pounds. In its first year, the unit treated 34 micro-preemie babies.
“She fights. I fight. That’s pretty much all that we can do,” said Markie Miller, the mother of the first baby born in the Small Baby Unit. “There’s no other way you could do it. You just have to do it.”
The unit can house up to six babies. It has special lighting and noise reduction to recreate an environment similar to a mother’s womb.
