JANESVILLE (SPECTRUM NEWS) — It’s organ donation month and Monday morning, Mercyhealth Janesville held a special service to honor the most precious gift of all, the gift of life. Two individuals shared their stories of receiving donor organs.
‘You know a feeling of proudness…not only as a health care professional, but as a recipient,’ Mercyhealth OR Nursing Director Mary Remley said.
20 years ago, the Type 1 Diabetes sufferer got a new kidney. Although it happened on April Fool’s Day, it was no joke.
‘Absolutely it changed my whole world, I went from 0 to 60,’ she said. The nurse no longer felt tired and was able to complete her BA & Masters in nursing.
Milton’s Robert Roy also shared his story of suffering from non-alcohol related liver disease. When it became cancerous a few years ago, he had pieces of it removed and needed a new liver. Luckily, three years ago, one became available and he’s had no rejection.
‘It’s really, really a gift of life…and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to the family who made that sacrifice for me.’
