The Pediatric Therapy department at Mercyhealth Hospital-Rockton Avenue consists of occupational therapists, physical therapists, a developmental therapist, and speech and language pathologists, providing services to children from birth to 14 years of age. Therapists are licensed by the State of Illinois and are credentialed with the early intervention system, the Division of Specialized Care for Children, and their professional organizations.
Our therapists evaluate and provide ongoing services for inpatients and outpatients. Services are available in our facility, as well as in the home within a limited distance from the hospital. Individual and group therapy sessions are available based on the child’s needs. We offer occupational, physical, speech and developmental therapy.
Occupational therapy focuses on helping children develop skills needed to function independently in their daily lives. This may include play, feeding, dressing, school participation, etc. Specifically, occupational therapy tends to focus on arm/hand function and sensory integration issues.
Physical therapy focuses on assisting children in the development of skills to help them function safely and independently in day to day activities. This may include general mobility, school participation and play. Specific focus of physical therapy is on lower extremity functions, gross motor skills, gait and balance.
Speech therapy focuses on improving a child’s overall communication skills which includes the understanding of language, use of language and articulation of words. Our speech-language pathologists also evaluate and treat a variety of children with oral motor and feeding disorders. Other focuses of speech-language therapy could include children with hearing impairments, voice disorders and stuttering.
Developmental therapy is play-based therapy in the home or in the center that promotes optimal development in the areas of self-help, personal-social, language, cognition and motor skills.
