Memory Care: Preventing Memory Loss

Memory loss occurs normally with aging. However, not everyone develops mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Memory problems can start even in your 30s and 40s, although at that age, other medical problems are usually to blame. These can include poor quality sleep, partial complex seizures, side effects of medication, hormonal problems such as thyroid disease, or vitamin deficiencies. These are usually conditions that have a number of solutions.

Memory loss can have surprising causes

Treating memory problems in patients younger than 60 usually involves a different approach than treating elderly patients. These include:

  • Maintaining high levels of vitamin B12
  • Improving quality of sleep
  • Eliminating or reducing medications that can cause memory problems
  • Treating any chronic pain problems
  • Increasing exercise
  • Doing mental exercises such as crossword puzzles, learning new skills, or playing card games

By addressing underlying medical problems and maximizing lifestyle changes, many people can improve memory function, and also reduce the chances of it getting worse. If you’re concerned that you have memory loss from an unexplained source or condition, consult Mercyhealth’s memory clinics in four locations in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin for an appointment. Don’t be afraid to ask about memory loss; you may be surprised by the cause.
