Medical Genetics

Mercyhealth Hospital – Rockton Avenue offers the only comprehensive medical genetics program in the region.

The program works to families prevent, treat and adjust to any number of genetic disorders. Many disorders cannot occur unless both the mother and father pass the disorder on through their genes. Some diseases can be inherited from only one parent. Other genetic disorders are the cause of an error or mutation that happens during the cell division process. Testing by a trained medical geneticist can reveal conditions that are easily treatable as long as they are detected. Medical genetics helps patients achieve a diagnosis prenatally or in childhood or adulthood and receive the appropriate medical support for that diagnosis.

Our team consists of a medical geneticist who is board-certified in clinical, biochemical, and molecular genetics, plus board-certified genetic counselors. The team is available for evaluation, management, treatment, and genetic counseling for:

  • People with a family history of a genetic condition
  • People with a family history of cancer
  • Pregnant women and their partners
  • Children or adults with a genetic condition or suspected genetic condition
