Autism: Evaluation

A parent may worry his or her child is showing signs of being autistic. To start an evaluation process for your child, call Mercyhealth Behavioral Health Services at (608) 756-5555 or (800) 341-1450 and ask for autism services. A Mercyhealth Autism Program team leader will call you to start the assessment process, which starts with a phone screening.

Your child will meet with the evaluating psychologist for a complete evaluation. It may take more than one visit to complete your child’s evaluation and make an accurate diagnosis. You can be assured Mercyhealth will provide a thorough and caring examination of your child and help you make any pertinent decisions throughout his or her treatment.

Mercyhealth looks for autistic behavior with many tools

  • Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)
  • Parent questionnaire
  • Behavioral observation
  • Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (GARS)
  • Connors’ Rating Scale
  • Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC-2)
  • School documentation
  • Sensory profile

If your child does not meet the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder, the evaluating psychologist will refer your child to other services that may benefit him or her. If your child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, the evaluating psychologist will discuss options to consider with you and your family.
