ROCKFORD — Mercyhealth presented a $250,000 gift to the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford on July 19.
Javon Bea, president and CEO of Mercyhealth, presented the check to Alex Stagnaro-Green, dean of the college. Dr. John Dorsey, interim chair of the department of medicine at the college and chief medical officer and vice president of physician services at Mercyhealth, also made remarks.
Mercyhealth’s donation will support the college’s expansion to a four-year medical school. The expansion will bring 55 first-year medical students to Rockford this August. Before the expansion, medical students spent their first year in Urbana and completed the remaining three years in Rockford.
Mercyhealth’s gift to facilitate the expansion includes support of a new anatomy laboratory with a state-of-the-art virtual anatomy table in addition to traditional cadavers and a classroom designed for team-based learning.
