Resident Well-being

Residency is an inherently stressful time for many residents.  Primary stresses can include the steep learning curve, the responsibilities of becoming a practicing physician, and managing work-life balance.

It is essential for residents to take care of themselves during residency.   To support these efforts our program provides a variety of opportunities and resources, including the following:

  • Residency retreat
  • A variety of residency social events
  • Planned quarterly clinic team recreational afternoon (bowling, games, hiking, etc.)
  • All-clinic team-building events at South
  • Monthly resident support groups
  • Faculty advisor/advisee meetings
  • Behavioral scientist available for support, consultation
  • Physician wellness lecture series, including:
    • Fatigue and its management
    • Mitigating burnout
    • ACGME AWARE curriculum for enhancing wellness and satisfaction
    • Mindfulness
  • Resident fatigue contingency plans, and back-up system for workload
  • Bi-annual resident self-evaluations
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Wellness Committee including resident representation at class
