Mercyhealth is promoting safe sleep by gifting every newborn delivered at Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside with a free Halo SleepSack Swaddle.
“Helping to keep your newborn safe while sleeping is very important to us. We provide safe sleep education and instructions to parents on how to use the Halo SleepSack gift we are giving each baby to take home. This SleepSack will eliminate dangers for baby such as getting entangled with clothing and loose bedding during sleep,” said Linn Carter, System Director of Women and Children’s Programs and Services at Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside.
“Families have really enjoyed receiving the Halo SleepSack as a gift,” said Geneva Porter, Supervisor of OB Services at Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside. “It is a great visual reminder of the education we provide during the patient stay, helping to establish and maintain safe sleeping habits for their newborn.”
Mercyhealth also encourages all parents to:
- Place newborn babies on their back to sleep.
- Keep pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and other items out of the crib.
- Use only a tight, fitted bedsheet on a firm mattress.
Mercyhealth also discourages co-sleeping, however, “co-rooming” is encouraged to help identify newborn feeding cues.
Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside is the only State of Illinois-Designated Children’s Hospital in the northern Illinois region and has a wide spectrum of pediatric services: Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, State of Illinois-Designated Regional Perinatal Center for 11 counties, Level III (highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and one of only two Small Baby Units in the State of Illinois.
