Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital–Rockton to transition to standby emergency department beginning tomorrow

As had previously been announced, emergency services at the Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital–Rockton will transition to a standby emergency department, effective May 6. The classification of a standby emergency department, as defined by the Hospital Emergency Service Act, requires a registered nurse on duty in the hospital to be available for emergency services at all times. A licensed physician shall be on call to the emergency department at all times.

The decision to make this transition came after extensive evaluation of the needs and utilization of the Rockton Avenue campus. The review showed the majority of patients accessing the emergency department did not need emergency care and could be treated at an urgent care facility. Also, although efforts continued for several years, Mercyhealth was unable to secure the manpower, staff or financial capabilities to operationalize two emergency trauma departments for one hospital license in Rockford.

Other services at the Rockton campus will remain in place, including, but not limited to:

  • Radiation oncology
  • Medical oncology
  • Pain management
  • Outpatient ORs
  • Primary endoscopy suite
  • Numerous clinical services

Emergency services organizations throughout the area have been alerted to the change.
