ROCKFORD, Illinois – Mercyhealth Hospital-Rockton Avenue was designated as a pediatric trauma center, making it one of only 5 in Illinois and the only hospital in Rockford region equipped and staffed to offer the most sophisticated care possible to seriously injured children.
It is the only Rockford hospital designated as capable of providing comprehensive trauma care to children who have suffered blunt trauma, penetrating wounds and head injuries in incidents such as crashes, falls or violent acts.
To achieve this prestigious status, pediatric trauma centers must have a pediatric intensive care unit, advanced pediatric physician specialists and surgeons in-house, 24 hours a day, to treat the most severe injuries in children. They also must offer teaching and research programs to direct innovations in pediatric trauma care.
Although Mercyhealth Hospital-Rockton Avenue has been operating as a pediatric trauma center for several years, it has been pursuing this designation for the last year. Mercyhealth passed a rigorous certification process and continues to meet specific national criteria and standards of care recommended by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The achievement is significant since the number of children treated for serious injuries at Mercyhealth increases every year. In fact, Mercyhealth has seen an increase in pediatric patient transfers from the region by 36% percent since the beginning of 2017.
“Statistics nationwide shown that injured children are more likely to survive and have better recovery outcomes when they are cared for at pediatric trauma centers,” said Dr. Michael McCarthy, DO, FACS, medical director of pediatric trauma at Mercyhealth.
